Major: Graphic Design
Graphic Design major Justin Wentland has always been involved in art, ever since he was a kid in grade school. Whether it was doodling on a piece of paper or preparing his artwork for an exhibition, the creative endeavor has always been his passion.
Why did you come to MSU?
MSU holds a special place in my heart. I have loved it since I was a kid, and it has always been a goal of mine to come here. I have a legacy of Spartan graduates in my family, so I have been to campus many times. The one thing that always stood out every time I visited is the feeling of “home,” from the people you meet to the campus landscape and events.
Why do you aspire to be a Citizen Scholar?
I was immediately drawn to the program because I feel it gives you the opportunity to build a meaningful life. It points you in the right direction and builds a road map for you to succeed over your four years at MSU.
In addition, I have a tremendous opportunity to be involved in the art movement here at MSU. Since there is an art component to the program, it appealed to my interests. I have already met a myriad of art faculty and students whom I would not have been able to meet if it wasn’t for the program. It is amazing to think about how the program has already enhanced my MSU experience, and I am looking forward to the doors this could open for me in the future.
What has your experience been like so far in the Citizen Scholar program?
I have met some amazing people and new friends in the program. It seems in every class or meeting we have, you are collaborating and working with new people. I love that aspect. I am looking forward to more volunteer and community service opportunities within the program. In high school, I began working with community groups and enjoyed it very much. In fact, recently in the Citizen Scholars program, we began working with a local nonprofit in the Lansing area that provides meals to children of families that do not have the means to afford dinner at home. Being able work on a common goal that affects lives in a positive way with other Citizen Scholars aspirants is extremely rewarding. My next step is to get involved with Habitat for Humanity.
What are you looking forward to most in the Citizen Scholar program?
I am looking forward to taking advantage of the study abroad programs that are offered through Citizen Scholars. I am particularly interested in visiting England, Central America, and/or Iceland. To learn about another culture and experience its people in their own community will enhance my growth as a person so I can become a better citizen after graduation.
For me, it is exciting to think as the inaugural class we will shape the future of the program for other Citizen Scholars entering the program. None of this comes easy however, you must put in the effort. The more you put in, the more you will get out of the program.
